A photograph of the first house Max Millen and his team built after returning to Montana hangs in his Gallatin Valley office. Surrounded by family heirlooms, the photo is a reminder of roots, craftsmanship, and memories. For Max, the picture isn’t just a memento—it’s a milestone, representing how far he and M-Squared Construction have come. The house, situated on a gentle slope in Bridger Canyon, showcases timeless design—a fusion of stonework and natural siding, two stately chimneys rising from elegant rooflines, and expansive windows framing Montana’s raw beauty. A grove of aspens planted during the build grows at its edge—much like the company that built the home.

Building Homes & Trust
“It was proof that we could build something meaningful here in Montana—not just a structure, but a future,” Max says.
Today, M-Squared is a well-respected custom home builder in the area and is known for its balance of quality, value, and efficiency—and for treating each project like its own home.

For many clients, Max’s mindset and work ethic leave a lasting impression. Long after the final inspection, they remember him not just as their contractor, but as a collaborator who genuinely cared about their vision.
“Ten years ago, we built our home,” say Bryan and Katie Suprenant, the owners of the first house M-Squared completed. “One of the best decisions we made was choosing the right builder. Max was easy to work with, clear in his communication, and genuinely committed to making sure things were done right.”
Max runs M-Squared with his wife Lexie, co-owner Mike Boettcher, and Alex Davis. What began as a family vision is now a thriving business rooted in trust, skill, and Montana values. After graduating from Montana State University in Bozeman, Max honed his craft in Colorado, gaining broad construction experience.

But Montana called him back.
In 2014, the family relocated to the Gallatin Valley, bringing with them not just industry know-how, but also a philosophy in long-term relationships and lasting craftsmanship.
“It was a big deal to pack up and move my family to the valley, but I couldn’t have chosen better people to do it with,” Mike Boettcher says. “Over the years, relationships evolve, and I believe that we will always have each other’s backs when it comes to work and life.”

Designing and building a custom home is never simple. It starts with a dream—a sketch, a vision —and then, reality.
That’s where Max and M-Squared step in.
“Getting in early is key,” he says. “We’re almost like a quarterback, the intermediary to the architect, to make sure the vision is getting off the paper and onto the ground.”

“Small details that others might overlook are exactly the ones we focus on, ensuring comfort now and for years to come. We don’t get many callbacks, and our job is to make sure we don’t.”

From the moment an architect begins drafting, M-Squared is ready to engage—offering rough estimates to keep budgets on track, placing bids, and guiding clients through material choices that align with both style and function.
And while subcontractors play a crucial role, M-Squared goes a step further, ensuring that the right personalities and craftsmanship fit each build. Whether selecting one of a dozen electricians or narrowing choices down to the perfect cabinet maker, every decision is made with the client’s vision in mind and focused attention to every detail.
“We do things that other builders don’t,” Max says, using his specific dimension requirements for plumbing layouts as one example. “Small details that others might overlook are exactly the ones we focus on, ensuring comfort now and for years to come. We don’t get many callbacks, and our job is to make sure we don’t.”

Even on projects that span many months, M-Squared is known for keeping things moving smoothly—a rarity in custom construction.
“Mike brought an equally impressive level of expertise to the table—his knowledge of construction, scheduling, and attention to detail were remarkable,” Brad and Devan Parker, two clients, say.
When the Parkers bought their property, they turned to M-Squared to create something uniquely theirs. The result is a striking contemporary residence overlooking Bridger Canyon—a symbol of both the family’s dream realized and M-Squared’s commitment to blending innovation with Montana tradition.
“Working with Max and Mike was hands-down the best decision we made throughout our entire home-building process. They were super detail-oriented, and we were always able to rely on them to do the right thing.”
–William Burke, Client

“We always felt confident knowing he was overseeing the moving parts behind the scenes and ensuring everything stayed on track,” they say.
Max is the first to acknowledge that challenges are part of any project.
“Believing there won’t be obstacles is unrealistic,” he says. “What matters is addressing them immediately, not letting them linger.”

That candid approach has become one of Max’s defining traits. Clients know where things stand, what challenges might arise, and how decisions impact outcomes. That transparency builds trust—and lasting relationships.
“Working with Max and Mike was hands-down the best decision we made throughout our entire home-building process,” William Burke, another client with a home in Bridger Canyon says. “They were super detail-oriented, and we were always able to rely on them to do the right thing.”
While most of the work is managed by M-Squared’s specialized team as well as carefully vetted subcontractors, Max still occasionally trades his keyboard for a toolbelt. Over the years, he has hand-crafted custom cabinetry, bunkbeds, and a metal fireplace mantel that blends Swiss heritage with Montana ruggedness.

“Building a home from the ground-up creates more than a house, it creates a lasting bond. We don’t just build homes, we build relationships that last.”
–Mike Boettcher, M-Squared Construction
“It’s fun to get out and do the retaining wall—we’re not trying to dig the whole thing, but we have the means to do it,” Max says. “We did all the trim carpentry for the last house we built—we even used these 20-foot walnut slabs for wall-to-wall shelving.”
From their office on a knoll north of Bozeman, the view stretches across the Gallatin Valley—and somewhere among the Big Sky landscape lie the homes M-Squared has built, each one a testament to collaboration and craftsmanship.
Long after the final inspection is passed, clients stay connected. That’s not just good business, Max says, “it’s part of who we are.”

“We’ve built dozens of homes,” Max says, “but what sticks with us are the people. When we run into past clients at dinner or school functions, we don’t just say hi—we remember what we built together.”
