Hollyman Design Defines Linar Luxe

DARRIN HOLLYMAN DESIGNS MORE THAN SPACES; HE COMPOSES EXPERIENCES. WITH A KEEN EYE FOR THE UNEXPECTED AND A LIFELONG RESPECT FOR THE INTENTIONAL, HIS WORK IS A STUDY IN CONTRAST: BOLD YET RESTRAINED, LUXURIOUS YET LIVABLE, DARING YET PROFOUNDLY CONSIDERED. FOR NEARLY TWO DECADES, HIS CAREER HAS FOLLOWED A SIMILAR TRAJECTORY, AN EVOLUTION SHAPED BY AESTHETICS AND AN UNSHAKABLE BELIEF THAT GREAT DESIGN SHOULD BE AS THOUGHTFUL AS THE LIFE LIVED WITHIN IT. HIS CLIENTS, NEIGHBORS, AND COLLABORATORS ARE PROOF OF HOW CONSIDERED DETAILS, HONEST MATERIALS, AND A DEEP SENSE OF PLACE CREATE SPACES THAT RESONATE BEYOND THEIR WALLS.

From his early days obsessing over form and function to his current status as a visionary force, Hollyman never settled for the ordinary. His multiple awards, including one from the Central Oregon Builders’ Association, are evidence of it. He chases inspiration as some chase the final brushstroke or the perfect blueprint, capturing each detail until the master piece emerges with the understanding that the best ideas often come from the inbetween moments. His approach is less about trends and more about transformation because, for Hollyman, design is more than what you see; it’s what you feel and remember.

“My goal was to create a home where clean lines and natural materials converge, allowing the residents to immerse themselves fully in the breathtaking landscape. Every material, every line, every shadow was considered.”

-Darrin Hollyman

The ideal canvas for Hollyman was a hillside in Brasada Ranch with gentle undulations that juxtaposed well for a home that exemplifies balance. Crisp architectural lines converge with the raw poetry of the landscape. Expansive glass walls dissolve the barrier between indoor and outdoor living with overhanging rooflines that stretch toward the horizon, and clean geometry quietly elevates the sweeping views and distant peaks. This is where Hollyman went beyond designing a home and composed a next level experience, not by being flashy, but by allowing the landscape to amplify its uniqueness more subtly and intentionally.

“My goal was to create a home where clean lines and natural materials converge, allowing the residents to immerse themselves fully in the breathtaking landscape. Every material, every line, every shadow was considered,” he shares. Sculpted into the expansive 1,800 acres of Brasada Ranch, just beyond Bend, the 4,500 square foot home is a collaborative effort between Hollyman, builder Kevin Vaughan of Solid Rock Builders, interior designer Rebecca Bassett of Rebecca Bassett Interiors, and landscape architect Karen Rossetto Eng of Lifescapes Bend. Inspired by the Oregon high desert, their vision reflects natural materials, earthy textures, and a design that unifies indoors and out, creating a grounded and expansive home.

The exterior validates that theme with thermally modified hemlock siding, arranged horizontally and vertically, paired with a natural Camas Basalt stone veneer. A sleek black standing seam metal roof crowns the structure, diminishing its volume to honor the earth. Western red cedar paneling introduces warmth, balancing the color palette with hues that echo the terrain. Sustainability and practicality led to native vegetation and minimalist landscaping blended with curated shrubs and grasses to simulate the surroundings. Dry creek beds and vegetative basins manage rainfall onsite, ensuring minimal impact on neighboring properties. A bridge leads to the main entry, crossing over a dry creek designed as a functional yet aesthetic water retention basin. Upon crossing, residents are met with breath taking vistas of the Sisters and Mt. Bachelor, a striking introduction to a home that embodies the essence of Brasada Ranch. “We wanted the approach to feel like part of the story, where the journey into the home becomes an experience in itself,” Hollyman explains.

“This project represents a significant milestone in my journey to elevate mountain modern architecture. It’s a passion realized through partnerships that take joy in the creative process and uphold deep seated respect for the environment.”

Floor to ceiling windows along the façade allow natural light to illuminate the interior, creating an uninterrupted connection to the outdoors and offering unobstructed views of those spectacular Cascade Mountains. The home’s multitiered design and angular forms favor the relationship to the surrounding habitat.

The main level comprises the primary suite to the right, while the dining room and great room open onto a palatial 1,234 square foot covered deck. A guest suite shares access to this expansive outdoor deck, ensuring that every room capitalizes on the peaceful and stunning views. Longtime local builder Kevin Vaughan emphasized the significance of this connection, noting that by incorporating flat and single shed roofs, the home increases the interior’s openness to the outside, further enhancing the home’s relationship to its environment. Natural stone elements extend from the exterior to the interior, with three stone columns anchoring the design and a modern, linear fireplace mirroring the home’s polished aesthetic.

The media and recreation room offers flexibility. Beneath the landing is a sauna, and on the lower level, a kitchenette and bar open directly to a hot tub area. The area steps down 30 inches, creating intimacy and a sense of retreat, allowing residents and guests to immerse themselves in the landscape while offering shelter from the elements.

A discreet single car garage and an oversized double car garage enhance the home’s symmetry. These garages provide ample storage while maintaining the home’s streamlined, understated form. The rear elevation opens onto an expansive patio centered around a fire pit for year round gatherings, where conversations linger beneath Oregon’s cherished dark skies.

This residence is a pinnacle of the visionary collaboration between hollyman design, Solid Rock Builders, Rebecca Bassett Interiors, and Lifescapes Bend. It sets the next level standard for modern mountain living in Central Oregon, where thoughtful design innovates the experience while respecting the environment. “This project represents a significant milestone in my journey to elevate mountain modern architecture,” Hollyman states. “It’s a passion realized through partnerships that take joy in the creative process and uphold deep seated respect for the environment.”

For Vaughan, the experience of building a home is about leading a team toward a shared goal. Vaughan states, “Everyone, from hollyman design to the final cleaning crew, plays an essential role in transforming a concept into a finished home, and I recognize no one person can accomplish the entirety of a build alone. Teamwork says, ‘I can’t accomplish this without you,’ while arrogance says, ‘You’re welcome for this job,’ and my philosophy of gratitude and teamwork is the foundation of my job sites.” He adds, “Because Darrin brings professionalism, I can focus on building rather than playing the designer role. His abilities to listen, adapt, and push forward innovative ideas and his willingness to stick his neck out to prove them like building a mountain modern theme in a traditionally rustic setting—make him an invaluable partner. Unlike many high end designers, he is prompt, pragmatic, and more concerned with the project’s success.”

Rebecca Bassett’s exterior design choices enhance the architecture by defining and reinforcing the natural color palette inspired by Bend’s immersive scenery. “We all came together harmoniously to align on the exterior design direction,” Bassett says. She plans to emphasize natural materials and organic elements that add texture, warmth, and a sense of place to the interiors by continuing to select tones and textures that resonate with the serene panorama and inviting atmosphere.

Mountain modern architecture thrives in the raw beauty of high altitude landscapes. Natural materials and contemporary design merge to create homes that feel timeless and entirely of the moment, which is why this aesthetic remains so desirable. This design approach speaks to those who seek connection to nature without sacrificing comfort, functionality, or style. The balance of organic and industrial, wild and structured, reinforces its enduring relevance.

Through this endeavor, hollyman design and his team have built a home that transcends expectations; it doesn’t just sit on the land; it belongs to it, making it as timeless as the mountains and landscape. By sharing his purpose with his collaborators, he has created a place where each detail is a reminder of the art of thoughtful design and a reverence for nature that results in an unparalleled living experience in one of the most sought after locations in Central Oregon.
