Besting the Elements

by Lori Williams

Our synthetic roofing shakes are lightweight and durable, providing the most authentic wood shake look. They are completely fire-resistant without the need for a special fire-resistant underlayment. In the event of a fire, CeDUR shakes extinguish flame spread and do not allow a flame to propagate on the surface of the product.

One thing that never changes is the changing of our seasons and the relentless assault from the elements on the most vulnerable part of our homes, the roof. Locally-owned Miley Roofing (MR) has been combating sun and storm for 30 years with a wide array of roofing services to meet the need, consistently providing competence, reliability, and professionalism in the process.

Aside from weather elements, the threat of fire danger is ever near. Scott Miley, a volunteer firefighter and former owner of Miley Roofing, explains fire danger. “In addition to direct heat exposure, the biggest danger is airborne firebrands carried away from hot columns of thick, smoky air. Roofs are the most likely place for sparks to land.”

MR carefully selects product lines in a range of colors, textures, patterns, and styles that work well in a mountain setting and with a variety of architectural designs, while also addressing energy-saving performance and local fire and building codes. They carry a variety of products to meet Class A fire ratings including slate, asphalt shingles, metal, and composites. One composite, CeDUR, is the most realistic synthetic roofing shake ever made and features a Class 4 Impact Rating and Class A Fire Rating (highest industry ratings).

Says Jason Hyland, Marketing Director, CeDUR Synthetic Roofing Products, “Our synthetic roofing shakes are lightweight and durable, providing the most authentic wood shake look. They are completely fire-resistant without the need for a special fire-resistant underlayment. In the event of a fire, CeDUR shakes extinguish flame spread and do not allow a flame to propagate on the surface of the product.”

“With a 50-year Lifetime Limited Warranty, you’ll get a lot of life out of it. In comparison to some of its equivalent competitors, the textured surface of this shake also provides a better bond with snow and holds it well.”

– Troy Quesnel, Owner, Miley Roofing

Whatever elements that nature hurls at us, CeDUR shakes are super durable with a high insulation value. They are solid top to bottom and front to back with no underside cavity. “With a 50-year Lifetime Limited Warranty, you’ll get a lot of life out of it.” says Troy Quesnel, owner, Miley Roofing. “In comparison to some of its equivalent competitors, the textured surface of this shake also provides a better bond with snow and holds it well.”

The grain patterns, shadow lines, and texture of CeDUR shakes are true to life because they have been molded from natural cedar shakes. Troy says, “In terms of its look and install, this is one of the most realistic shake replacement products resembling natural wood that we have. As of 2016, a Blaine County Fire Protection Ordinance banned the installation of traditional wood shake roofs due to our location and propensity for experiencing wildfires. CeDUR is a great option for our customers wishing to maintain the integrity of a wood look but using a premium composite product.”

Costly maintenance and roof repairs can be a frustrating out-of-pocket expense for homeowners. Traditional roofing alternatives like wood shake shingles, concrete roof tiles, or asphalt shingles have a shortened life cycle and will require more maintenance over time. CeDUR synthetic shakes are comparable in cost to most traditional roofing alternatives and require virtually no maintenance. Says Jimberly Rooney, MR Office and Sales Manager, “We haven’t had to replace shingles since we began installing CeDUR 15 years ago. We also recommend a regular roof inspection and keeping it free of debris.”

“Its appearance looks beautifully aged. Our most popular color choice is Walden – Chocolate Brown, which is reminiscent of a 10- to 15-year-old wood shake.”

– Jimberly Rooney, Office & Sales Manager, Miley Roofing

Many insurance companies will no longer insure wood shake roofing in high fire danger zones. “CeDUR is a great replacement option, which actually adds value to your home,” says Jimberly. “Some insurance companies offer a lower rate or will completely alleviate premiums for a fire-resistant option. Currently in the valley, even though a wood shake roof is grandfathered in, you are only allowed to repair up to 20% of the roof with original wood shakes, and with those efforts you also risk creating more damage.”

CeDUR shakes may be installed in a straight or staggered course. Natural movement is designed into the product to give a roof the natural cedar shake appearance. Says Troy, “CeDUR shakes are installed by our skilled craftsmen in the same way as wood shakes, with no special tools or accessories. Each piece is hand-chosen and hand-laid. It’s efficient to install with minimal waste.”

To mimic the aging of natural wood, CeDUR implements a proprietary color system designed to weather to a natural wood tone within the first 90-120 days of installation. The color will set and remain constant over the life of the product. Says Jimberly, “Its appearance looks beautifully aged. Our most popular color choice is Walden – Chocolate Brown, which is reminiscent of a 10- to 15-year-old wood shake.”

Jimberly says CeDUR’s sales team is outstanding. “When their reps visit our projects, they’re always amazed at what we put it on,” she says. Miley Roofing has again won the award for best roofer in the Wood River Valley. They know their reputation is only as good as their crews, three of which are specialized in CeDUR installation. Says Jimberly, “Our crews are amazingly dedicated. They are just as proud of their work as we are of them. There’s a lot of labor in these jobs, but they get the job done.”
